Over 50% of Sub-Saharan Africa remains unbanked and without access to formal financial services

The Africa Financial Inclusion Summit and Expo 2025 is currently underway in Johannesburg, South Africa. The continental Annual Summit aims to address the financial inclusion gap, to reduce poverty and inequality and accelerate the achievement of other sustainable development goals on the continent. This year's summit is held under the theme- Development in Africa. Thami Ngubeni spoke to Nazeem Hendricks, a senior finance specialist at the National Treasury's Jobs Fund.

Access to Financial Services

Financial inclusion in Africa remains a critical challenge with current estimates showing only about 43% of people have access to bank accounts in Sub Saharan Africa. Financial exclusion contributes immensely to increased poverty and inequality and by extension leads to low levels of economic growth.

Financial inclusion can play a catalytic role in reducing poverty and inequality and accelerate the achievement of other sustainable development goals on the continent.
